On Thursday, the Canadian Public Health Authority announced ten new confirmed cases of monkeypox, including the first case recorded in the province of Ontario, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 26.
The agency said that the province of Quebec recorded 25 of the total cases, an increase of nine cases from Wednesday. And it is likely that more cases will be confirmed in the coming days, after examining samples from different regions.
Canada confirmed the detection of the first two cases of monkeypox last week.
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox but milder, and was first recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the 1970s. The number of cases in West Africa has increased over the past decade.
On Thursday, the World Health Organization said that about 200 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been found in more than 20 countries where the disease is not endemic.
