Eyes focused on the Campi Flegrei also from the European Union, due to the frequent earthquakes that are affecting the entire area. The EU Emergency Response Coordination Center (ERCC) “is closely monitoring the situation” and “as always – reported a European Commission spokesperson – The Commission stands ready to provide assistance in natural disaster scenarios and in other cases through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, where an affected Member State requests support.”
Constant monitoring from Palazzo Chigi
The current situation “is constantly monitored” also by Palazzo Chigi “implementing the provisions of Legislative Decree no. 140 of 2023”, which concerns urgent measures to prevent seismic risk connected to the bradyseismic phenomenon in the Campi Flegrei area. “As for prevention, it will have to be defined across the board with priority on making schools safe and guaranteeing the continuity of essential services”, it was underlined yesterday at the end of the summit convened by Giorgia Meloni.
Fear of an event that forces one to flee
After the strongest shock of magnitude 4.4 recorded last Monday, followed by the one yesterday morning of magnitude 3.6, Even stronger earthquakes are expected but not higher than magnitude 5, according to what was proposed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. In Pozzuoli, several families were reported rushing to do their shopping, looting the various ATM points: the fear of an event that would force them to flee persists.
De Luca to the Municipalities: “Prepare escape routes”
And after all, the organizational machine is also preparing for the worst. “Opening reception centers in the event of evacuation of citizens, because we need high-level structures and we are not yet completely adequate, and then the escape routes: I invite the municipalities to focus their attention on these two objectives”, he urged yesterday the president of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca. “There must be no construction sites that block travel, we must prepare services for our citizens as best as possible”, he recommended, hoping for collaboration at all levels. “We must all work together and I hope so everyone busy wasting time, not wasting a minute. We must be prepared for everything“the governor said.
“Problems in the evacuation plan”
“Those who chose to live in the Campi Flegrei area knew they lived in a difficult area that presents risks – said the Minister for Civil Protection Nello Musumeci yesterday evening, at the end of the summit at Palazzo Chigi. “These are complex places, a particularly dangerous caldera and in that area – added Musumeci – thousands of buildings and housing units have been built, around 80 thousand people live there and this excessive anthropisation of that territory had to be prevented in the past. Now it could create problems with the evacuation plan”. Plan on which “the government will work in the next few days”, announced the minister, while procedures are already in place in the area to prepare for a possible escape from the area.
