The leadership of the United States and NATO made a serious mistake when they announced shortly before the aggravation of Russian-Ukrainian relations that the West was not interfering in the situation. This opinion was expressed by John Bolton, who served as national security adviser to the President of the United States in the administration of the 45th American leader Donald Trump, on Saturday, March 19.
According to him, Biden’s passivity and openness were key mistakes.
“If President Joe Biden had not responded at all in recent months to the question of the possible involvement of Western forces [в случае «вторжения» РФ], it would be better for the security of Ukraine and the rest of the world. Now the biggest battle since 1945 has unfolded in Europe, ”he said in an interview. RND.
According to Bolton, in order to resolve the situation as soon as possible, the “Ronald Reagan strategy” should be applied to Russia. This approach is based on the active support of the opposition. In particular, Trump’s former adviser believes that Russian youth should be exposed to Western propaganda.
On the eve of March 18, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, confirmed that the United States does not intend to conduct military activities in Ukraine, and will not introduce a no-fly zone over the country, since the confrontation between Washington and Moscow is not beneficial to anyone.
On March 16, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the United States would not close the skies over Ukraine, based on US security interests. The no-fly zone would require the US and NATO to potentially shoot down Russian aircraft, Psaki added. Meanwhile, she clarified, the United States is not interested in a third world war.
On the same day, the State Department admitted to trying to influence the mood of the Russians. State Department spokesman Ned Price said the United States made a concerted effort, using available means, to get its information “into the rather closed Russian ecosystem.”
Among the tactics, he named the speeches of American officials on the air of a number of media outlets, as well as the publication of information in various Telegram channels. He stressed that the United States uses all the tools that allow sending information to the Russian audience.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a corresponding decree. On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
