Senate committee wants to hear from the football player after the English FA says he forced yellow cards
A CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) on betting in the Senate approved this Tuesday (June 18, 2024) a request for an invitation to hear the Brazilian player Lucas Paquetáof West Ham (England). The English Football Association says the athlete deliberately forced yellow cards in 4 matches held in November 2022 and August 2023 to benefit sports betting.
According to the British tabloid The Sunthe bets in question were placed by accounts registered on Paquetá Island, in Rio, where the Brazilian national team midfielder was born.
The approval was made symbolically, in which there is no nominal vote count because there is consensus in the collegiate on the request. The hearing date has not yet been set.
The requests were made by senators Jorge Kajuru (PS-GO), who is president of the commission, and Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE).
“It is considered that the testimony of Mr. Lucas Tolentino Coelho de Lima [Paquetá]will allow the elucidation of various aspects related to the commission’s investigation object”stated Girão in the request.
ATHLETE DENIES
Paquetá, however, denied the accusations in a statement published on his official account. Instagram on May 23rd.
“I am extremely surprised and upset that the F.A. [Federação Inglesa de Futebol] decided to accuse me. I cooperated with all stages of the investigation and provided all the information I could.”he wrote.
