Former president gave the green light for his party, the PL, to approve taxation on purchases of up to US$50; to try to reverse damage among supporters, politician launches campaign defending veto of measure
The former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) launched this Friday (May 31, 2024) the “veta, Lula” campaign and asked for the help of its supporters to clarify its position in relation to the taxation of purchases in foreign online stores, approved by the Chamber of Deputies . According to him, the PT members are attributing responsibility for the 20% taxation on purchases of up to US$50 to the former head of the Executive.
Bolsonaro launched the campaign after guiding his party’s deputies, the PL (Liberal Party), supporting the approval of taxation. O Power360 found that the former president sent a message saying he agreed with some federal taxation on purchases.
The text, read by the leader Altineu Cortes (PL-RJ) to the other members of the party, was written by Bolsonaro in response to a message he had received from businessman Luciano Hang, owner of Havan stores. Trader, Hang said that the exemption from purchases on foreign websites represented unfair competition with Brazilian companies.
Supporters of the Lula government raised the #BolsonarotaxouVocê, crediting the former president with responsibility for approving the taxation, when the vote was symbolic, which means unanimity.
On his WhatsApp profile, Bolsonaro presented a different position than the nomination and stated that he wanted to “embarrass the petralhada” with the truth.
Here’s the entire thing:
“’Veta Lula’ campaign and help the poor:
The PT is blaming Bolsonaro for taxing purchases through apps like Shopee, AliExpress and Shein, even though the project was authored by Lula:
This is what PT members say:
‘Every time you pay the import tax, remember that Bolsonaro taxed you’
To reverse this fake news, and embarrass the truth, I suggest the ‘VETA LULA’ campaign”
The law project (914/2024) of Mover (Green Mobility and Innovation Program), with the device that ends the exemption from federal taxation for foreign purchases of up to US$50, was approved by symbolic vote in the Chamber. In other words, in theory all the deputies present approved it.
In the session of the National Congress that evaluated the vetoes, which took place moments before the vote on the Mover bill, the PL bench was present with 88 deputies and 13 senators to overturn the president’s veto Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the law that prohibited temporary departures of prisoners to visit family, known as “saidinhas”. Therefore, it was expected that the entire group of deputies approved the taxation.
Bolsonaro’s guidance on approving the taxation of “shopping” It also goes against his previous position. In 2022, then-president he said that he would not sign any MP (provisional measure) to tax foreign online purchases. “For possible irregularities in this service, or others, the solution should be inspection, not tax increases”declared on his profile on X (formerly Twitter).
The former president he said on Tuesday (May 28) that his government has always been against any taxation, increase or creation of new taxes. And he stated: “We are against any project that further burdens Brazilian citizens”.
