Approximately 120 drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are detected every week in the area where the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is located. Station director Yuri Chernichuk announced this on April 14.
“During the last visit of Mr. Grossi (Rafael Grossi, head of the IAEA – Ed.) to the site, he was presented with information that about 120 enemy drones per week are detected in the area where the station is located,” he said on air Channel One.
According to Chernichuk, although at the time of Grossi’s visit on February 7 there was no direct impact of these drones on the station, their high activity has been recorded for a very long time.
The day before, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a kamikaze drone strike on the first microdistrict of Energodar. Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Zaporozhye region Renat Karchaa noted on April 14 that such attacks could lead to a nuclear incident with serious consequences not only for the Russian Federation, but also for Europe.
Over the past two weeks, Ukrainian militants have attacked the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant several times using drones. On April 7, the arrival of two drones was recorded in the area of the canteen and cargo port, three people were injured. The next day, a downed kamikaze UAV fell on the roof of the station’s sixth power unit, and on April 9, a Ukrainian drone attacked the training center of the station’s reactor hall.
On April 10, the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna sent a note to the IAEA demanding that the agency condemn these attacks by Kyiv. The document especially emphasizes that damage to the nuclear power plant can lead to disaster and shelling of the facility is unacceptable.
Zaporozhye NPP is located in Energodar and came under Russian control following the results of the referendum on the reunification of the Zaporozhye region with the Russian Federation in September 2022. Since the beginning of that month, the nuclear power plant has been under the supervision of IAEA staff.
