The Gipuzkoa Civil Guard located this Saturday the body of a young immigrant in the Bidasoa River, which forms the border between Spain and France, in the municipality of Irun (Gipuzkoa), as reported by the Government Delegation in the Basque Country to through social networks. This is Abderrman Bas, 25 years old and from Guinea, as he has been identified after the comparison of his fingerprints in an investigation by the Civil Guard. According to sources from the Government Delegation in the Basque Country, Bas had entered Spain through Arrecife (Lanzarote) on May 12. The coroner will perform an autopsy next Monday. The body has been found in an area of the border river located between the international bridge of Behobia and the island of Pheasants.

The Government delegate in Euskadi, Denis Itxaso, has reported that the body has been found in the Dana Vieja area of Behobia while waiting for the coroner to proceed with its removal, the same sources have indicated, which have specified that “ the good condition” of the body indicates that the young man has died by “drowning” and in “very recent” time. The Civil Guard continues “touring the river upstream” with jet skis and land patrols along its banks in search of personal belongings and clues that may clarify the circumstances of death.
Itxaso has demanded “safe, legal and orderly migratory flows” and has lamented this “new human drama” of a migrant who “is looking for a place to develop a life and meets death on a border within Europe”, as also published on social networks.
The director of Immigration of the Basque Government, Xabier Legarreta, has stated about the immigrant found dead that the “selective and racist” control of the French police on the Irún border causes these “dramatic situations”. That French control “forces these people to use less secure routes to achieve their goal” of passing into France and in some cases “causes” their death. After participating in an act in Bermeo (Bizkaia), Lagarreta has remarked that “the migratory phenomenon in transit once again shows its harshest and most dramatic face”. “From the Basque Government, once again, we demand safe routes and corridors”, he said.
With the deceased this Saturday, there are five migrants in transit who have died in just over a year in the Bidasoa when they tried to cross the border river and continue their journey to France or other European countries. On May 22, 2021, Yaya Karamoko, from the Ivory Coast, 28, drowned; Abdoulaye Coulibaly, 18, from Guinea Conakry, lost his life on August 8; and on November 20, another body was found that was not officially identified. On March 30, 2022, the body of a sub-Saharan migrant who disappeared 18 days earlier was found, when three entered the waters of the border river and only two of them reached the shore on the French side.
