Five A Finnish peacekeeper involved in Operation Unifil was slightly injured on Wednesday when an angry mob caused an incident in Lebanon.
A nine-man Finnish patrol was on the move in its area of operation in southern Lebanon with three armored vehicles when the crowd prevented it from advancing in the afternoon, according to a statement from the Finnish Army.
A menacingly crowded crowd gathered around the patrol vehicles, and in the situation, five Finnish peacekeepers were subjected to mild violence. Vehicles also suffer damage.
The situation was calmed down in co-operation with the Lebanese Armed Forces. The patrol arrived back at home base in just over three hours.
According to the Land Forces, no armed force was used in connection with the incident.
The Finnish doctor checked the injured at the base, and everyone involved in the patrol was offered discussion assistance.
The cause of the incident is unknown.
Finland participates in the UN multinational operation Unifil as part of the French Commander’s Reserve Battalion. About 200 Finns are serving this wound in the operation.
The main tasks of the Unifil operation, which began in 1978, are to control the blue line, the temporary border between Lebanon and Israel, to support the Lebanese armed forces and to assist the local population, the Defense Forces website states.
Finland has participated in the peacekeeping operation in 1982–2001, 2006–2007 and since 2012. In total, about 10,500 peacekeepers from 45 countries are participating in Unifil.
