Entering its ninth year of production, the Zero FX will feature a new 5” TFT color display and livery for the occasion.
The minimalistic 5” TFT display replaces the cool LCD screen of yesteryear and provides all the necessary information, such as speed, battery status, power output, selected driving mode and estimated charging time. The Zero features two standard riding modes (Eco and Sport) and a User mode. You can set its parameters using the Zero Motorcycles smartphone app.
So we’ve talked about the 2022 updates fairly quickly, but that might be the perfect time to take a closer look at the tech specs of an electric motorcycle like the Zero, after all, for many of us ‘an electric’ still means something. a mystery.
The Zero FX is powered by the Z-Force 75-5 motor with passive air cooling. The brushless motor with air-cooled Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) generates a net torque of 106 Nm. With a continuous output of 15 kW (21 hp) at 4300 rpm, the Zero FX is also suitable for A2 driver’s licenses. Maximum engine power is 33 kW (44 hp) at 4,500 rpm, a carbon fiber belt drives the rear wheel.
The FX’s motor controller is a high efficiency, 550 amp, three-phase controller, without carbon brushes and with regenerative braking energy. Such an engine controller fulfills a similar role in an electric motorcycle as the injection system of a motorcycle with a combustion engine. The controller meters the electrical power from the battery to the engine depending on the input from the propulsion lever and the driving mode.
The intelligently integrated Z-Force Li-ion battery pack has a maximum energy capacity of 7.2 kWh. This translates into a nominal capacity of 6.3 kWh. Zero explains that this value differs from the maximum energy capacity because the calculation is based on an average voltage. This results in a more realistic representation compared to the maximum value, which rarely occurs.
With an integrated 650 W charger, the standard charging time from 0 to 95% is 9.7 hours. Optional external auxiliary chargers can speed up that process and cost 835 euros each. With one auxiliary charger, the charging time is reduced by up to 95% to 3.6 hours, with four auxiliary chargers it is still 1.3 hours. From 95 to 100% takes half an hour, regardless of the charging method. You can also charge the battery with a charging cable that fits easily into any 220V household socket.
With the Z-Force 7.2 battery pack, the Zero has a maximum range of 146 km in city traffic. At an average speed of 89 km/h, the range is 90 km, if you increase the average to 113 km/h, the range drops to 63 km.
The 2022 Zero FX with the ZF 7.2 battery pack is available from 13,630 euros (B and NL).
