Jamie MacDonald’s Cuck performance is a stand-up comedy that fits in well with Mad House’s rugged and intimate space.
Stand up
Cuck. Premiere at Mad House Helsinki Slaughterhouse. Screenplay and presentation by Jamie MacDonald.
Jamie MacDonaldin stand up night Cuck takes the viewer to the laboratory of comedy, after which the ability of humor to nullify others and, on the other hand, its world-changing power are clearly seen.
MacDonald, who has corrected his sex, and his male friend, who has corrected his sex, are having a baby together. According to MacDonald, just saying this life situation out loud is a bomb, after which there is no end in sight to people.
However, MacDonald says things outright – even though most of the treatment he receives on social media is for fear of hate speech. And the hidden anguish of tolerant people rattles him equally. “I’m transphobic too,” says Jamie MacDonald, because I’m tired of hearing reassurances from people that they’re not transphobic.
Why, then, does he torture himself in a some that offers mere humiliation? He seeks an answer to this question with his own presentation.
Cuck or “Cuckoo” is a stand-up comedy for which Mad House’s rugged and intimate space fits well. In the book, MacDonald explored his relationship with social media by comparing it to watching a car accident. The chain crash just goes on and on and you can’t get your eyes off it even if you don’t really want to even look.
Social media speech bubbles are projected on the wall, nothing else is needed, as MacDonald’s full-body standard electrifies the space. It is rough on the surface but beneath is a subtle ballet of gestures and tones.
MacDonald’s evening progresses from everyday observations to another. He jokes about how a man who has never had to think about his gender can really know what it is to be a man. MacDonald turns his head on prejudice. For him, opening them is the source of comedy.
MacDonald is Hannah Gadsbyn related, but more essay in expression. He hides under lightness large conceptual coils, such as the arbitrariness of admiring naturalness and how we assume from nature that it is cis and hetero. For example, a cuckoo that lays eggs in the nests of others is just as much a part of nature as birds that behave differently.
Finland a flagrant violation of human rights by law is a claim against those who have corrected their gender for inability to reproduce. Diving into the thinking at the bottom of the law creates the red thread of the evening, as the performance opens up the distortion of thought one after another.
My description makes the performance sound serious, but it’s not. Cuckissa truly true to laugh! I don’t want to open well-crafted throws. They need to be experienced on site. Good comedy has to be just as dangerous Cuck is.
