After four years of absence, the Glass House of NPO 3FM returns. Four DJs from the radio station will lock themselves up a week before Christmas in a simulated greenhouse in Amersfoort. With the symbolic action, which as usual will bear the title Serious Request, they hope to raise as much money as possible to combat climate change. The donated amount goes to the World Wildlife Fund and is intended for the protection of rainforests in South America.
The DJs Sander Hoogendoorn, Frank van der Lende, Jorien Renkema and Rob Janssen are allowed to eat during the promotion, unlike during previous Serious Request editions. A new feature this year is that the public present on the square can determine the temperature in the building. Visitors have to ‘make an effort’ in a greenhouse that is linked to the Glass House, and can thus lower the temperature for the DJs.

If the corona measures allow it, 3FM hopes to revive old times. Anyone who has ever been to the Glass House will think of atmospheric city squares with a dancing crowd. Despite the winter cold, many visitors queued for hours to donate money to charity and request their favorite song. Over the past seventeen years, 3FM has raised money for, among other things, the reduction of malaria, the prevention of infant deaths and aid for sexual violence. During the action, the DJs did not eat and slept in a small room in the glass building.
In 2016, the then six-year-old Tijn gained national fame with his nail polish campaign. The terminally ill boy had the goal of raising 100 euros for the Red Cross. In return, he painted the DJs’ nails. His initiative was well received, among others Prime Minister Rutte painted his nails. Thanks to Tijn, at least 2.6 million was raised. In Ivory Coast, a clinic was dedicated to the boy. He passed away in 2017 from stem cell cancer.
Serious Request brought in millions of euros every year. The record edition was that of 2014, when 12 million euros were collected. After that, the popularity of the promotion decreased and the listening figures of 3FM also fell. In 2018, the radio station opted for a different initiative and with that, Het Glazen Huis with fasting DJs disappeared. Instead, the DJs tried to raise money for the Red Cross on foot. In the previous edition, in 2020, the proceeds were 1.6 million euros.
