In his first appearance at the UN General Assembly, the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, made harsh criticisms of the United Nations, which he accused of wanting to “impose an ideological agenda” on its member countries and of no longer being capable of solving the world’s major problems.
Milei delivered his speech at the general debate on Tuesday afternoon (24) in New York. Criticizing the UN as “an organization that imposes an ideological agenda on its members,” the libertarian president added: “An organization that had been essentially designed as a shield to protect the realm of men has been transformed into a multi-tentacled Leviathan that seeks to decide not only what each nation-state should do, but also how all citizens of the world should live.”
“We have seen how an organization that was created to defend human rights has been one of the main promoters of the systematic violation of freedom, as happened with the global quarantines in 2020, which should be considered a crime against humanity,” he said, citing the lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Along these lines, Milei criticized the points of the 2030 Agenda, which speaks of sustainable development goals until the end of this decade.
“The 2030 Agenda, although well-intentioned in its objectives, is nothing more than a supranational government program of a socialist nature, which seeks to solve the problems of modernity with solutions that threaten the sovereignty of nation states and violate people’s rights to life, liberty and property. It is an agenda that seeks to solve poverty and discrimination with legislation that only deepens them,” said the president.
“Argentina will not support any policy that involves restricting individual freedoms, trade or violating the natural rights of individuals. It does not matter who promotes it or how much consensus it has,” he added.
In the part of her speech that dealt with UN mediation in international conflicts, Milei accused the organization of voting “systematically against the State of Israel, which is the only country in the Middle East that defends liberal democracy” and of having demonstrated “an inability to respond to the scourge of terrorism.”
“The organization also failed to fulfill its mission of defending the territorial sovereignty of its members, as we Argentines know first-hand in relation to the Falkland Islands,” said the Argentine president, who also criticized the lack of a solution to “the aberrant Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
By repudiating the Pact for the Future, which includes measures such as the reform of the UN Security Council and actions to contain climate change and which Argentina did not sign last Sunday (22), Milei proposed what she called the “Freedom Agenda”.
“Argentina will abandon the position of historical neutrality that has characterized us. And it will be at the forefront of the fight in defense of freedom,” said the president.
