Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), national president of the party and ally of current mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) in the race for Mayor of São Paulo, told State who expects the second round in the capital of São Paulo to be between Nunes and influencer Pablo Marçal (PRTB). “It would represent a gigantic failure for the left,” said the senator, citing federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who forms a ticket with the Workers’ Party.
According to him, “Marçal would only have a chance against Boulos” in a possible second round of the São Paulo election. In the scenario tested by Quaest released this Wednesday, the 18th, Boulos has 42% and Marçal, 36%, in a possible second round. Nunes, on the other hand, beats both in the scenarios tested with them.
When asked whether the scenario is not unfavorable for the right, since the vote of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) voters in the last general elections, in 2022, was divided between the mayor and the former coach, the senator stated that this is not a concern, since Nunes also has the vote of a larger portion of the electorate, and recalled that the former president did not have a majority vote in São Paulo. In the city, Lula won 47.5% of the votes, against 38% for the PL politician.
Ciro Nogueira also stated, regarding Marçal’s profile, that the businessman “is not a Bolsonaro supporter”, but rather “wants to be Bolsonaro”, the same comment he said he made to the former president himself. “But I am not either”, the senator added, “just like Nunes, who is a more centrist politician” does not have such an evident Bolsonaro proposal.
For him, Marçal’s main mistake, who flirted and tried in several ways to keep his image close to Bolsonaro’s in the campaign so far, was the frustrated attempt to participate in the September 7th event on Paulista Avenue, an event organized by the evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia, in which the former president and the current mayor shared a float. Bolsonaro himself accused the PRTB candidate of “making a platform at the expense of others”, an episode he called a “regrettable incident”.
Regarding the latest Quaest poll, released this Wednesday, the 18th, which shows that Marçal lost eight points among Bolsonaro voters, the senator sees that the decline has less to do with the chairing of the businessman by TV presenter José Luiz Datena, from the PSDB, but that it is still a reflection of September 7th. A week ago, on the 11th, Marçal had 50%, now he has 42%. Nunes, the candidate officially supported by the former president, went from 32% to 35% among the Bolsonaro electorate.
