A contract has already been awarded, worth just over 800 million dollars, to lift the International Space Station out of orbit and crash it into the ocean. The operation will be carried out using a Dragon capsule from the company SpaceX starting in 20230. However, there are experts, including former directors of NASA and the European Space Agency, who believe that such an operation would be a mistake. They point out that it is the most important space infrastructure ever built, that it is an unprecedented demonstration of cooperation among all of humanity, which has produced a true monument in orbit. As an alternative, they propose raising the orbit of the station and taking it to an altitude of 800 kilometres. There it could be parked with minimal maintenance costs for future generations. With the new technologies that will be available then, perhaps those 400 tons of obsolete technology could be put to some use or, at least, it could be preserved as a historical relic, a monument that could serve as an inspiration to future generations.
