Kamala Harris, the US Vice President, who is supported by President Joe Biden and many prominent Democrats, appears to be the most likely candidate to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for the US presidential elections, but she must choose a running mate to campaign with her.
Choosing a vice president is based on a complex strategy that includes calculations to win key states and attract the votes of moderate voters or women.
The selection process, which usually takes several months, will be accelerated this time because the duo will appear at the Democratic National Convention on August 19.
Here is a tour of the names that are constantly being brought up.
-Josh Shapiro
The 51-year-old Pennsylvania governor’s name is being floated a lot. Choosing Josh Shapiro would make it easier for Democrats to win his state, which plays a crucial role in the November presidential election.
Pennsylvania is one of the most important “swing states” that could give victory to either the Democrats or the Republicans depending on the election, and decide the outcome of the vote.
Shapiro is a good, centrist orator who narrowly defeated his far-right rival, backed by Donald Trump, in the 2022 election.
He was formerly the Attorney General of Pennsylvania.
-Mark Kelly
The 60-year-old former military man and astronaut has represented Arizona in the Senate since 2020. Arizona is also a “swing state” that Joe Biden won in 2020 against Donald Trump with the smallest margin of victory between the candidates.
Kelly has been particularly vocal about gun control since his wife, former Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords, was shot in the head at close range in 2011, nearly killing her, during a public rally.
-Andy Bashir
The 46-year-old Democratic governor of Kentucky was re-elected last November in the overwhelmingly Republican state.
Kentucky voted for Donald Trump by 62 percent in 2020 and looks unlikely to be overturned. But Beshear’s moderation could help Democrats win in other states where middle-class and blue-collar votes are key, including Pennsylvania and Michigan, both in the “Rust Belt,” a region of the northeastern United States that has been hard hit by the collapse of industry.
Asked Monday morning by MSNBC if he might be chosen as vice president, Beshear said only, “If someone asks you, you should at least listen to them.”
– Roy Cooper
The 67-year-old North Carolina governor also runs a “swing state” that Joe Biden lost to Trump in 2020 by one percentage point.
He has been a representative for this state, located on the eastern coast of the United States, since 1986 and is known for never losing an election, according to American media.
This moderate Democrat might persuade independent voters to choose the left camp.
Asked by MSNBC on Monday, Cooper declined to comment, saying he wanted to focus on Harris’s candidacy, to which he has given his unwavering support.
