The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), pre-candidate for re-election to the position, raised his tone and used strong words to refer to his main opponent, federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) this Monday, 22nd.
At the PL convention, which officially announced the nomination of Colonel Ricardo Mello Araújo as the MDB candidate’s running mate, the mayor called Boulos an “invader,” “bum” and “shameless.” Jair Bolsonaro, the party’s main star, and Valdemar Costa Neto, the party’s national president, were not present at the convention. The federal deputy has not yet responded to requests for comment.
“I want to thank each of you for giving us this vote of confidence so that we can continue our work and defeat this invader, this bum, this shameless man,” said Nunes, referring to Guilherme Boulos, although without mentioning him by name.
The mayor also indirectly criticized the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), even though the MDB is part of the coalition and forms part of the economic team through Simone Tebet, the Minister of Planning. According to Nunes, his administration was marked by tax reductions and the elimination of fees, “different from what we are seeing out there”. The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, who supports Boulos, has taken measures to increase federal revenue and is the target of the opposition, which has used nicknames and memes on social media to accuse him of raising taxes.
In his speech, Mello Araújo said he was still getting to know the mayor and made a mistake when he said it was an honor to participate in the PL convention and run in an election to bring “renewal” and “change.” Although this is the first time the colonel will run for election, Nunes was a councilman for two terms and has been governor of the capital of São Paulo since 2021 – first as Bruno Covas’ deputy and then as head of the Executive after the tucano’s death from cancer.
The colonel said he reformed the Rota battalion “without a single cent” from the state and that he brought “order to Ceagesp” by ending child sexual abuse, drug trafficking, prostitution and corruption. “With the mayor’s experience and my willingness to work, what takes 40 years we can do in four,” said Mello Araújo.
The mayor was unable to say why Bolsonaro was absent, as it was a PL event. Mello Araújo added that “certainly” the former president had other agendas and that was why he did not attend.
Nunes recalled the first time he met the then president and said that, to be nice, he lied to him about having watched the Palmeiras game the day before. They are both Palmeiras fans. The mayor mentioned the agreement to extinguish the city’s R$25 billion debt with the federal government in exchange for the transfer of Campo de Marte to the Air Force.
According to the head of the São Paulo Executive, Bolsonaro did not ask for “anything else” to sign the agreement other than the allocation of the saved resources to the people who need it most.
Asked about Pablo Marçal’s (PRTB) prediction that he would change his vice-president before the election, Nunes stated that the influencer is not doing “very well” as a psychic. “I think it would be better for him to continue as a coach,” he said ironically in an interview with journalists.
