Forest fires burned across Greece, from the suburbs of Athens to islands in the Aegean Sea, while several regions remained on high alert in anticipation of fires breaking out tomorrow, Thursday.
Firefighters used planes to contain a fire in the village of Kitsi, southeast of the capital, but after the flames surrounded several buildings, video footage showed.
According to Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias, the fire was deliberately set near the highway that leads to Athens International Airport, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday. The minister said today in a televised statement: “We have visual material that clearly shows the arsonist setting fire to dry grass.”
Europe is preparing for another summer of bad weather and record temperatures, while climate change increases the intensity of heat waves.
