The Israeli army announced this Sunday (16) that it will maintain a window of 11 hours a day without attacks in southern Gaza for the entry of humanitarian aid. Named by the Israeli military as a “tactical stop”, the breaks will take place from 8 am to 7 pm local time.
The idea is for trucks with aid shipments to depart from the Kerem Shalom crossing, the main entry point for aid entering southern Gaza, to the village of Al Bayuk and Khan Younis Hospital.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) warned, however, that this does not mean a “truce” in the fighting in and around Rafah, in southern Gaza.
Humanitarian aid and Eid al-Adha
Speaking to CNN International, the director of UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, in Portuguese) Scott Anderson considered the “tactical stop” for humanitarian aid to be welcome. “We hope this long daily break will allow us to move freely,” he said.
Israel’s announcement comes at a time when Muslims begin the celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, in which they remember the sacrifice that the prophet Abraham would make of his son Ishmael, which, according to the Muslim faith , it did not happen through divine intervention, with a ram being sacrificed instead.
