Prisoner exchange|According to the Swedish Prime Minister, the release of Hamid Nour, who was sentenced to life, was not an easy decision. However, according to him, saving Swedish lives is above all else.
in Sweden an Iranian sentenced to life imprisonment By Hamid Nouri the release has attracted a lot of criticism.
Sweden told on Saturday from the prisoner exchangein which Iran released a Swedish diplomat sentenced to life against Nouri by Johan Floderus and Swedish By Saeed Aziz.
Nouri was sentenced to life imprisonment in Sweden for his participation in the executions carried out in Iran in 1988, which violated international law.
“Hamid Nouri was convicted of very serious crimes. Now he is not serving his sentence for the crimes he committed. I don’t think it will do justice to the many victims of the 1988 executions,” describes the Swedish secretary general of the human rights organization Amnesty Anna Johansson Swedish public radio for SVT.
On the other hand Iran has long been known pressuring Western countries by imprisoning their citizens. Sweden’s decision to exchange prisoners looks like a victory for Iran’s questionable pressure tactics.
“The risk is, of course, that since this clearly works, the pressure will continue,” says Johansson to SVT.
In addition, the prisoner exchange was criticized because Sweden did not get a Swedish-Iranian doctor released Ahmadreza Djalal, who has been sentenced to death by Iran. He has been imprisoned since 2016.
Djalal’s wife Vida Mehrannia had to in an interview with news agency TT decision as discrimination. Djalali received Swedish citizenship in 2018.
“If they really see us as Swedish citizens, why don’t they put so much effort into my family,” thought Mehrannia.
Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson justified the exchange of prisoners at the weekend, among other things, by the fact that at least two Swedes have now been sent home.
According to him, releasing Nouri was not an easy decision.
“Sometimes you have to do difficult things and do the right thing. Protecting and saving Swedish lives is above all else for me as prime minister,” he said Dagens Nyheterin by.
According to Kristersson, Iran was ready to do “almost unimaginable things” to get Sweden to implement the exchange.
Foreign minister Tobias Billström according to SVT, Iran did not agree to negotiate on Djalal’s release.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister responded to Djalal’s wife’s criticism.
“I have a deep respect for his disappointment. But I don’t quite understand the criticism, because the alternative would have been to leave the two Swedes who were now able to return home,” he told Sveriges Radio.
