A serval cat – a wild feline from different areas of Africa – attacked a dog and a domestic cat in a home in Canet de Mar (Barcelona) last Thursday. The owner of the attacked pets was able to capture the serval and take him to a veterinary center, which arranged for him to be sent to a recovery center.
The feline appeared at the woman’s home, very aggressively, without her knowing where it came from. She was able to retain him and take him to the Center Veterinari Hàbitat Canet where they verified that he did not have an identification chip. The health workers contacted the Foundation for Advice and Action in Defense of Animals (FAADA), which notified the Generalitat of Catalonia. The body of rural agents transported the serval to the Torreferrussa Fauna Center (Barcelona) where it remains, according to FAADA, until a place is located where this species can be rehabilitated. The animal rights organization regrets that the Generalitat does not have public rescue centers for wild species, so the feline’s stay may be prolonged.
The serval lives in the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa and is included in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flowers (Cites), so if its trade is not controlled the species could be threatened. . Even so, FAADA admits that the possession of these animals was legal until last September 2023 and now the organization assures that with the National Law for the Protection of the Rights and Welfare of Animals the possession of more adult wild mammals is prohibited. of five kilos. The serval is a solitary, carnivorous predator that can jump up to three meters high and weigh up to 18 kilograms.
On the black market you can pay more than 8,000 euros for a specimen of this feline that, according to FAADA, will never be completely domesticated. “Having a serval cat as a pet is dangerous, because the frustration and discomfort that comes with captivity can encourage them to be even more aggressive than normal, biting, scratching and destroying objects, in addition to developing stereotyped behavior due to the lack of well-being,” Faada concludes in a statement.
