A report issued yesterday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees revealed that the number of forcibly displaced people around the world due to war, conflict and violence has increased, reaching 120 million people last May.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that the number of forcibly displaced people increased by about 10% to reach 120 million people worldwide last May, compared to the previous year.
The 120 million forcibly displaced people around the world represent about 1.5% of the world’s population, according to UNHCR.
The UNHCR added that more than two-thirds of the refugees were internally displaced, while two-thirds of those who fled abroad settled in neighboring countries, often under difficult circumstances, in the hope of quickly returning to their countries of origin.
It is noteworthy that the United States and Germany were the main destinations for those seeking long-term protection last year, as Germany received the second largest number of asylum applications after the United States.
