Official US records reveal an exponential growth in the number of Chinese taking illegal routes into the country.
Data from last year shows that around 37,000 migrants from the Asian giant were detained at the border with Mexico, a movement that increased almost 10 times compared to the previous year, 2022.
Most analyses, like the one in the magazine Foreign Policy, points out that this “exodus” is not new in the migratory context. However, what draws attention is that, increasingly, different groups that previously did not seek this alternative have chosen to leave the country under illegal conditions.
This is the case with Chinese university students, who are appearing at the southern border for the first time amid limited prospects in their home country.
The main motivation given for this escape from the Beijing regime is economic issues.
China has had a weak recovery since the pandemic, with an estimated growth of 5.2% last year, slightly above the official target, but far from the ideal expected by investors, who are increasingly paying attention to the worsening of the real estate crisis. in the Asian giant.
Combined with this, the confinement rules and other impositions of Xi Jinping’s dictatorship also lead part of the Chinese population to leave the country, including opting for risky means such as illegal crossing through the Darién jungle, today seen as the main illicit way to reach on the border between Mexico and the USA.
Organized crime plays an important role in this clandestine migration. According to the magazine Foreign PolicyChinese criminal organizations have forged ties with Latin American cartels to facilitate this market that has gained strength in recent years.
The fraudulent partnership yields high values for crime, with trips from China to the southern border of the USA costing, on average, between US$10,000 and US$20,000 (from R$52,000 to R$103,000).
Additionally, people fleeing China often borrow money from gangs who organize the trip to pay back with interest through work after gaining access to American territory.
