Immigration|The war in Ukraine swayed immigration statistics to a new faith. A lot of South Asian countries also immigrated to Finland.
The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.
Net immigration to Finland increased by almost 70 percent from 2022 to 2023.
Last year’s net immigration was the largest in statistical history, almost 58,000 people.
The increase in immigration is largely due to the war in Ukraine. More than a third of net immigration came from Ukraine, and about seven percent from Russia.
Net immigration Finland grew by almost 70 percent from 2022 to 2023, according to Statistics Finland’s announcement on Friday from population statistics. Last year, net immigration was almost 58,000 people, which was the largest in the history of statistics.
Net immigration means the number of people who moved to Finland minus the number of people who moved in the other direction.
Since two years ago, net immigration has more than doubled. Compared to 2015, the year of the so-called refugee crisis, net immigration was almost four times the amount last year.
Roll of the reasons for the increase in net immigration seen last year, one is by far the most significant: Russia’s war of conquest in Ukraine. More than a third of the entire net immigration, almost 20,000 people, came from Ukraine.
The vast majority of Ukrainians were counted as immigrants in 2023, even though the war started a year earlier. The reason is that Ukrainians who arrived in Finland under temporary protection in 2022 were given the opportunity to apply for the right of residence in 2023.
War has also caused migration to Finland from Russia. About seven percent of all net immigration came from there last year. Russia was the second largest source of net immigration in 2023.
However, the number of people coming from Russia has decreased since the peak year of 2022, when Russia started forcing men to go to war by ordering a “partial” mobilization. War caused a strong wave of emigration from Russia.
However, almost all of those who came from Russia have not come because of invitations. In Russia, conscription only applies to men, but approximately as many women as men have immigrated from the country to Finland during the war as well. For many Russians, the reason for emigrating can also be the general tightening of the political atmosphere.
Since the start of the war, very few Russians have immigrated to Finland compared to many other countries. According to a report published by the Finnish Foreign Policy Institute, at least 800,000 people have left Russia since the start of the war.
According to Statistics Finland, less than 10,000 people who left Russia have ended up in Finland. The majority have gone to countries such as Kazakhstan, Georgia, Turkey and Armenia.
In all more than half of net immigration to Finland comes from European countries. Of the rest, the overwhelming majority comes from Asia. The share of African countries in net immigration is about seven percent, and the countries of the American continent about one percent.
A lot of people from Asian countries, especially South Asia, moved to Finland last year. After Ukraine and Russia, the most important countries of departure for net immigration were Sri Lanka, India, the Philippines and Bangladesh.
Important Sweden is still the country of origin of immigration in Finland. However, it does not show up in the net immigration statistics because there is a lot of migration in both directions.
Net immigration from Sweden was only 273 people last year. The number was even negative for years until 2018.
Last year, more people immigrated to Finland from Sweden than, for example, from the Philippines. However, there was almost as much traffic in the opposite direction as well.
