After receiving the first shipment of updated doses against Covid-19, the Ministry of Health launched a new vaccination campaign against the disease. The proposal is to immunize at least 70 million people.
In the first half of May, Brazil received 9.5 million doses updated with the XBB.1.5 variant. In a note, the ministry informed that the vaccines are in the process of being distributed to the states, according to the schedule with the logistics operator.

“Many states have already started to apply monovalent XBB vaccines. The first batch began to be delivered on May 9th to the states, which have the autonomy to begin application immediately.”
The quantity of doses, according to the ministry, constitutes a type of emergency acquisition, sufficient to supply states and municipalities until the next acquisitions are completed.
“The first doses have an expiration date for the months of June and July 2024, written on the bottles, but extended by Anvisa [Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária] for September and October 2024, as recommended by international assessment bodies.”
New vaccine
According to the folder, the safety profile of the XBB monovalent covid-19 vaccine is known due to its wide use in other countries and is similar to that of the bivalent versions, “with the additional advantage of being adapted for the XBB.1.5 variant”.
“The vaccines offered by the National Immunization Program (PNI) are efficient, effective, safe and undergo a rigorous quality control process before reaching the population’s arms.”
Vaccination schedule:
Check out the vaccination schedule recommended by the Ministry as of January 1, 2024:
– for children aged 6 months to under 5 years, the vaccine was included in the vaccination schedule;
– an annual or semi-annual dose for priority groups aged 5 years and over, regardless of the number of previous doses received;
– people over 5 years of age who do not belong to the priority groups will be able to receive a dose.
“The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the vaccines available at vaccination centers remain effective against the variants circulating in the country. The complete vaccination schedule, including booster doses, when recommended, is essential to prevent serious forms and deaths from the disease”, highlights the ministry.
