A man with an explosive device was arrested this Thursday (23) at the headquarters of the Portuguese right-wing party Chega, in Lisbon, where he intended to kill the leader of the party, André Ventura, according to initial information.
A source from the Public Security Police confirmed the arrest to EFE and added that it is suspected that the man had mental health problems and that he is being examined at the hospital.
Ventura, who is in Funchal, capital of the Madeira archipelago, where campaign events are being held ahead of Sunday’s regional elections, told journalists that he was informed that “someone had entered or attempted to enter” the party headquarters.
“I have very little information because I was notified now that I was coming here, to the center of Funchal, that someone had entered or tried to enter our headquarters and that he said he was carrying an explosive device and that he wanted to kill me,” said Ventura .
The right-wing leader added that police had set up a security perimeter around his party building in Lisbon and the nearby Parliament.
“This is a bomb threat and I don’t have much more information,” reported Ventura, who stated that he would assess with the police whether there are further risks to his safety or whether this is an isolated situation.
“It is regrettable that this escalation of violence can continue. Let’s reevaluate our own security that we have at headquarters,” she commented.
