The California Academy of Sciences has launched a program to repopulate San Francisco with a close relative of the blue Xerces butterfly, extinct since 1940. The original Xerces is believed to be the first butterfly species in the United States to disappear due to loss of habitat derived from human development.
After years of genetic research, experts detected that the group of Silvery Blues butterflies is the closest genetically. Therefore, they have been selected to replace the extinct species through a pilot release program.
