Tens of thousands of demonstrators in the streets against Orban: the march in Budapest alongside Magyar
Tens of thousands of people protested in Budapest against the Hungarian prime minister, the ultranationalist Viktor Orbánin a demonstration convened by Péter Magyar, a lawyer who until recently was close to the government, and who now wants to launch his own party and denounces the “corrupt power” of the country.
“Today the Hungarian nation sent a message to power that enough is enough,” Magyar said haranguing the crowds filling Budapest's central Kossuth Square, in front of the Parliament building, saying the government is “afraid” to see Hungarian unity. “Let them return power to the people”, exclaimed the politician at the end of the so-called “National March” which he himself called, adding that step by step the Hungarians will reconquer Hungary and build a modern, free and democratic country. Magyar emerged into politics two months ago as a dissident of the Orbán regime and today he promised that he will participate in the European elections with a formation that has not yet been specified. Until three months ago he was a member of the boards of directors of several state-owned companies and worked as a lawyer in the Hungarian representation to the European Union.
Two weeks ago, the lawyer revealed a recording in which his ex-wife and former Justice Minister, Judit Varga, claims that Orbán's entourage exerted pressure to hide evidence of corruption cases affecting members of the executive. An investigation has been opened into his words.
