The tradition of coloring the asphalt of Rua Pereira Nunes every four years returned earlier in 2023 to support the Brazilian women’s soccer team in the World Cup. With the debut of the Brazilian players this Monday (23), against Panama, Rua de Vila Isabel, in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, hopes to be a meeting point for the green and yellow fans.
The tradition of the World Cup at Pereira Nunes began in 1982, and since then, the event has never gone unnoticed. The women’s football world cup, however, was ignored, and that began to change when the Vila Isabel Residents’ Association, with the support of the Visa credit card banner, called the artist Andressa Gandra to celebrate the visibility that women’s football has achieved.

“I had already painted graffiti on Marechal Hermes [bairro da zona norte do Rio], for the Men’s World Cup, last year”, said Andressa, who celebrates her first work to honor women’s soccer. “It’s something I never thought would be possible, and I’m very proud of it. I called my sister to be part of it, so that we can perpetuate the importance of valuing women’s football for the next generations”. she added.
The 150-meter painting on Rua Pereira Nunes was done in one day, from 8 am to 4:30 pm. In addition to her 15-year-old sister, Andressa had the help of her co-worker and a resident. “There were residents who got involved and wanted to paint with us, they got involved when it was time to store the materials, with food too, we had breakfast that day. Another person provided support by providing water, a place for us to go to the bathroom, ”she said.
In addition to Rua Pereira Nunes, Andressa also painted Rua Clara Nunes, in Madureira, where the Portela samba school is located. “The drawings I painted in Madureira and Vila Isabel were to represent women’s football, with symbols that represent football, such as the boot and the ball, and the flowers and lily of the winds, which bring the feeling of being in constant movement, the lightness and delicacy of the sacred feminine. Nature represents the feminine as well,” he pointed out.
Despite the bohemian tradition of the Vila Isabel neighborhood, land of the homonymous samba school and the sambista Martinho da Vila, the celebration to watch Brazil’s first game will be breakfast, as the match starts at 8am. The Association of Residents of Vila Isabel, located on the outskirts of Rua Pereira Nunes, will broadcast the game at its headquarters, on Boulevard 28 de Setembro, 174.
The director of the association, Celso Mendes, says that the idea is to bring together up to 100 women to watch the game, and promote debates on female participation in football and gender equality.
“When we talk about the Brazilian team, we take it very seriously. When we saw the possibility of doing something for women’s football and honoring women, we ran after it. Today, regardless of being male or female, for us it is important. If you’re wearing the national team shirt, it’s Brazil and we’re going to do the best job possible”, she said.
