The Madrid Press Association (APM)the Federation of Associations of Spanish Journalists (FAPE) and the Association of Parliamentary Journalists (APP) have released a statement this Friday in which they describe as “unacceptable” the treatment given to the representatives of some media at the press conference held by Vox in Congress to present the motion of censure against the Government, in in which the party leader, Santiago Abascal, and his candidate, Professor Ramón Tamames, participated.
The main associations of journalists in Spain recall that they have repeatedly denounced that Vox, a party whose financing comes mostly from public funds, “prevents journalists from various media from participating in the press conferences that it organizes at its headquarters Communication”; among others, THE COUNTRY. When the press conference was held last Thursday in the offices of Congress, “Vox could not prohibit the presence of any journalist, but it avoided granting the floor not only to the editor of EL PAÍS, who requested it from the outset and who was crossed out by the Vox press officer as ‘manipulator’, but also those of other national newspapers, such as Abc, The World either The vanguard”.
The three associations that represent a vast majority of the journalistic profession “consider that the attitude that Vox maintains with respect to the media that are critical of the party is far from the one that should have a formation that respects democratic principles and the exercise of freedom of expression”.
The APM, the FAPE and the APP urge “Vox and all political formations with parliamentary representation to respect article 20 of the Constitution”; which enshrines freedom of expression and the right to information and prohibits prior censorship. “Their obligation, far from putting restrictions, is to facilitate their work for journalists, assuming that reporters have the right to ask about the activities of political parties, regardless of whether they also maintain their right not to respond or to do so. in the sense that they deem convenient”, recall the journalists’ associations.
Finally, they call on the Congress of Deputies “to adopt measures so that all parliamentary groups maintain an attitude of respect for freedom of expression and the exercise of the journalistic profession.”
