A loose steering wheel, that is better to prevent than to cure. That is why an investigation has been launched.
Teslas have their own qualities, but every now and then a production error can creep in. So can the steering wheel of your Model Y e.g. letting go spontaneously. Of course you always have Autopilot, but a functioning steering wheel is useful.
We shouldn’t make the problem bigger than it is, because a total of two complaints have been received about loose steering wheels on the Model Y. We are talking about complaints to the NHTSA, the US agency that keeps an eye on road safety.
We wrote about one of these cases in January. A man suddenly found himself with a loose steering wheel in his hands when he was driving his brand new Model Y on the highway. He had only received the car a week before.
The cause is also known: in both cases, a bolt that holds the steering wheel and steering column together was missing. You apparently do not notice this immediately, but over time the steering wheel can suddenly come loose. That happens at an unfortunate moment: while driving, when pressure is exerted on the steering wheel.
With two cases we cannot speak of a large-scale problem, but yes, there are two too many. That’s why the NHTSA has launched an investigation. They are going to take a closer look at the Model Y from year 2023 to see if this does not happen more often. If so, a recall should be initiated.
Tesla’s previous recall could be done over-the-air, but it won’t in this case. Elon Musk can get a lot done, but installing a bolt over-the-air is not there yet. That may not be necessary at all, because the NHTSA has yet to investigate the matter.
