Under the cooperation, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives provides 5.5 million dirhams to the United Nations Fund “UnitLife”, which is governed by the French government, the United Nations Women’s Authority, the World Food Program and the “Ecobank” Foundation, in order to support the development of innovative solutions in the field of agriculture. , empowering women and mothers, and combating malnutrition, especially among children, in Senegal, Niger and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, benefiting more than 300,000 people.
The partnership constitutes a qualitative addition to the path of food support provided by the Foundation for Initiatives through the “One Billion Meals” initiative for individuals and families around the world, as it will support the sustainability of the food safety network it provides, finance the development of innovative local solutions in food systems to achieve food self-sufficiency, and promote individual and community farming methods. In turn, the Chairman of the “UnitLife” Council, Philip Blazy, said that the initiative is dedicated to combating chronic malnutrition by developing innovative systems that provide food, take into account the climate, and empower women. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, in Senegal, provides a contribution of 2.2 million dirhams to the integrated food resilience support project implemented by the non-governmental organization “Action Against Hunger” for two years, and includes 26 villages, and annually provides the equivalent of 730,000 nutritious meals, benefiting greatly from it. In Niger, the Initiatives Foundation provides a contribution of more than 1.1 million dirhams for the second phase of the project to improve the sustainability of food systems and production, develop food security, and enhance opportunities for providing inclusive financing for all, which is implemented by the non-governmental organization “Goal Global”, and will start in October 2022 to last for a full year and include 20 villages, providing annually the equivalent of 912,500 nutritious meals, benefiting directly and indirectly more than 142,485 people.
The program works on the main objectives of improving the productivity of highly climate-adapted nutritious crops, through partnerships with suppliers of improved seeds suitable for hot and dry climates, providing them to farmers at a discount of 40% of their price, and training them to plant and care for them. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Global Initiatives contributes more than 1.8 million dirhams to the project to establish a vital network that empowers women in agricultural communities, implemented by the United Nations Women’s Commission.
The project includes studies on food availability, eating habits and family feeding practices, specifically infant and child feeding, and conducting training courses on preparing nutritious food recipes, in addition to improving the skills of women, peasants and villagers in marketing agricultural products supported by the programme.
