European leaders celebrate Lula’s victory as a breakthrough in the fight against climate change
The possibility that Brazil will resume the fight against climate change with a new president more sensitive to environmental issues has focused the congratulations of several European leaders to Lula da Silva, winner of the presidential elections this Sunday in the country. Both the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the new British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, or the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, have mentioned the fight against global warming in their congratulatory messages to the president-elect.
Through Twitter Scholz has expressed his desire “close and trusting cooperation with Brazil, especially in matters of trade and climate protection.”
For his part, Sunak, recently appointed British Prime Minister, has expressed the same desire to “work together on issues that interest the United Kingdom and Brazil, from economic growth to the protection of the planet’s natural resources and the promotion of democratic values”.
Shortly before, the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, had also mentioned climate change, social justice and equality as the issues on which he hopes to collaborate with the new Brazilian president.
