A diesel six-cylinder from BMW, air suspension from Cadillac, the genes from DeLorean, a fiberglass body just like a Corvette and more than six meters in length. And a toilet. This sounds like the strangest combination of traits ever, but they go very well together. You’re looking at the Vixen 21TD, which is without a doubt the most revolutionary motorhome of the 1980s.
In the 1980s, American car brands were busy making products more economical and efficient. And so Bill Collins thought in the late 1980s that the world would need an economical motorhome. He was responsible for the DeLorean DMC-12 and the Pontiac GTO, among others. For example, Collins founded the company Vixen, with the idea of building a streamlined and economical motorhome.
A low camper with a BMW diesel engine
The result was this Vixen 21TD with a 2.4-liter in-line six from BMW. The low body was very aerodynamic, which meant that a consumption of less than 8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers should be possible. At the destination you could fold up the roof for extra headroom. For a camper, the thing was also very nice on the road and it reached 160 km/h.
Still, the Vixen 21TD was not very popular with the general public. Maybe it was a little too tight for the Americans after all. Or did they just not want to switch themselves? From 1986 to 1989, 376 units of this 21TD were sold. There were also 172 versions with a GM V6 and a higher roof, plus 39 more ‘limousines’. It wasn’t enough to keep the company going.

So it is quite unique that four are for sale at the same time, and then also in the Netherlands (although this makes it no rarer than a Fiat Multipla). The four Vixens are in Turnhout. The owner would like to keep one for himself, but the other three can go to a new owner. Nice detail: the white Vixen was in the film The Kronzeugin Mord in the Mountains. Who doesn’t know him?
The four campers are in according to the ad in ‘almost original and complete condition’. They have a bathroom, toilet, kitchenette and a bed. Prices range from 35,000 to 65,000 euros each. As said before, one must remain behind for the owner, but three may leave. Do you score such a rare and economical ‘BMW camper’?
