Emergency services confirm the death of two workers in Madrid due to heat stroke
The heat wave continues to claim human lives. Last week, between July 10 and 16, 510 deaths can be attributed to high temperatures, according to the update of the Daily Mortality Monitoring Report (MoMo), published by the Carlos III Institute.
The day with the most deaths supposedly caused by the heat was Saturday, July 16, with 150. In fact, the Carlos III data shows a gradual increase from the 15 deaths estimated on July 10, the first day of the episode of high temperatures. Thus, on the 11th, 28 were reported; on Tuesday 12, 41; on Wednesday 13, 60; Thursday 14, 93, and Friday 15, 123.
Among the deceased is a 58-year-old man of Romanian nationality who died on Friday of a cardiac arrest caused, in principle, by heat stroke, while working on a ship in Móstoles, according to sources from Madrid Emergencies. Also on Friday, a 60-year-old cleaning worker died after suffering heat stroke while cleaning San Diego Avenue, in the Madrid neighborhood of Puente de Vallecas.
The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, said this Monday that the deaths attributable to heat in the reports made by the Carlos III Institute are an “estimate”, and not “death records, which would give the specific cause of death”.
Meanwhile, five provinces (Teruel, Zaragoza, Lérida, Navarra and La Rioja) will be on orange warning this Tuesday (significant risk) due to temperatures that will be around 40 degrees, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). However, there will be a decrease in thermal records in the northwestern half of the peninsula, the northern plateau and the Cantabrian area, areas where the heat wave is over.
