The foundation acquires a new piece of land of almost 4,000 m2 and two old industrial buildings to have the necessary infrastructure
The Biodiversity Foundation, of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, recently selected the project “Regeneration of salt flats and sandbanks in the Mar Menor” (Resalar) within the call for grants to support large transformative projects of a scientific-technical nature for the promotion of the bioeconomy and the contribution to the ecological transition, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) financed with funds from the European Union – NextGenerationEU. The project, which has a budget of just over €1,700,000, will run until the end of 2025 and will generate several jobs.
This project promotes the recovery of a part of the Marchamalo salt flats (eight hectares in the eastern area) for the production of salt in an artisanal way, maintaining and increasing biodiversity, the restoration of the acquired ships and the demolition of other buildings in ruins. , and the conservation and recovery of natural vegetation and biodiversity in Monte Blanco and Caleta del Estacio. In the first, it is planned to continue with the restoration begun a few years ago, incorporating new land owned by the Cartagena City Council, and in Caleta del Estacio, the recovery of sandbank vegetation will be extended to five hectares, as well as the elimination of invasive exotic flora. in the maritime-terrestrial public domain area.
On the other hand, the project will make it possible to continue with the research coordinated by the IEO to evaluate the possible contribution of the flat oyster to improving the quality of the waters of the Mar Menor used to obtain salt, and of the lagoon as a whole .
The industrial warehouses acquired by the ANSE Foundation for the Custody of the Territory are the only ones of all the facilities of the old salt mines that are not in ruins, and preserve the original tile roofs. In addition to managing the salt flats, the ships and adjoining land will be used for the development of educational and informative activities as well as support for other works and projects related to the conservation and recovery of the Mar Menor.
Help from private donations
This project, in addition to the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, had the help of private donations, as well as the Nomen Foundation award, from the CajaMurcia Foundation, a small grant from the Office of Cooperation in the Mediterranean of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, through the Medarsalt project (Sustainable Management Model for Mediterranean Artisanal Salinas), and an agreement with the Estrella de Levante Foundation, some of which have yet to be received. These grants have helped finance the purchase of land and the preparation of different reports and projects to obtain licenses and authorizations from the three levels of administration.
The Demarcation of Coasts in Murcia is waiting only for the response of the General Directorate of the Natural Environment to transfer to the Ministry the resolution of the definitive concession to the ANSE Foundation of the public domain of the eastern salt flats. Other departments of the Autonomous Community such as Culture and Mines, have already reported favorably, as has the Cartagena City Council.
