Pakistani officials said that 11 coal miners died on Monday due to suffocation by toxic gases in the southwest of the country.
The accident occurred 40 kilometers from Quetta, the largest city in Balochistan province, when 11 miners were trapped while working.
“Initial reports indicate that the miners died due to toxic gases in the mine,” said Shahid Rind, spokesman for the Balochistan government.
Rind added that the mine manager and contractor were among the victims.
For his part, Shah Jamal, spokesman for the local rescue department, said, “The bodies of all the victims have been recovered.” Meanwhile, Rind said the regional government “ordered action (against the mine) due to non-compliance with safety protocols.”
