The division Technical Development Volkswagen is preparing to undergo a major realignment that will see it focus primarily on hi-tech vehicle components and will continue to grow in the coming years. This was announced by the German carmaker itself: the TD division will become like this Volkswagen’s largest engineering unit, counting over 11,500 employees who will drive its transformation into a technology company. Priority will therefore be given to software rather than hardware systems.
“If the car is increasingly becoming an electrically operated software product, then its development must also evolve in all dimensions – said Thomas Ulbrich, head of technical development at Volkswagen – We are making our TD division more connected and efficient, focusing our processes and our organization on systems and functions rather than on the components “. In concrete terms, this means that the German carmaker will invest in a new 800 million euro technological campus over the next five years: it will be a development center that will raise the bar for vehicle design and that will house more than 4,000 employees, almost all from the pool of people who already work for Volkswagen. In addition to these, by 2030 the company also hopes to have retrained between 6,000 and 8,000 current workers: their work will have to focus on design, conceptualization, UX, product strategy, model series and technical project management.
The investment that Volkswagen prepares to make will also be decisive for the development of its new vehicle platform, known as Project Trinity: we are talking about a fully connected architecture designed for 100% electric vehicles, which will be implemented for the first time in 2026 and will form the basis for all Volkswagen Group vehicles at the end of its cycle. Volkswagen’s TD division will take care not only of building this platform, but also of keep updating it over the years and to develop new vehicles on it: overall, a reduction in development times of 25% is estimated.
