BMW in MotoGP in 2027?
At the start of the week leading up to the French Grand Prix, FIM and Dorna made the new technical regulation which will be introduced in MotoGP starting from the season 2027. Among the most important innovations emerge the ban on any type of lowering device, but also the reduction of the displacements of the current 1000cc engines to 850cc. A change, the latter, which will therefore force all manufacturers to start from scratch, and which could also prove to be the ideal opportunity for other brands to enter the premier class of the MotoGP.
First the Superbike
A project that has been under discussion for some time BMW, currently present in Superbike. The German company’s intention is not a simple indiscretion, but has been confirmed by the CEO Markus Flaschwho in a recent interview with speedweek.com had indicated that he wanted to take the definitive step provided he won the Superbike world title by 2027: “There is no way to move up to MotoGP without having success in Superbike – he stated – this is out of the question for me, and I have told my team from day one that success in World Superbike is a must. We can prepare in parallel, but I will only make a decision if we are successful. We look at it strategically”.
Attention to the project
Victory in the top series of motorcycles derived from series production is therefore the fundamental and primary element in being able to make the final decision which, as underlined again by Flasch, will be evaluated by BMW very highly. “sober” and without getting carried away by enthusiasm, given that this challenge must be undertaken by the German company “with due attention”. “If it all makes sense, then we will have long-term stability, because after me, someone else will become head of BMW Motorrad. This is why I can’t say anything concrete yet, we are just starting the evaluation.”Flasch added.
The ideal moment
2027 will therefore be the year in which every manufacturer will have to comply with the new rules, with all these changes which, for the German manager, could be the ideal opportunity to start a new chapter in MotoGP: “When everyone starts from scratch, it will be time to jump on the MotoGP bandwagon – he concluded – but until then, we must be successful with what we do.”. An objective, that of victory in Superbike, that BMW wants to achieve as early as this year with Toprak Razgatlioglu, hired by Yamaha and 2nd in the world championship standings behind Alvaro Bautista.
