Austrian Dominic Thiem, 30, announced today, Friday, on Instagram, that he will retire from tennis at the end of the current season. Thiem said in a video clip: “I must deliver to you a very important, very sad, and also very beautiful message: the 2024 season will be my last.”
He said that among the reasons for his retirement were his recurring wrist injuries, in addition to his emotional state. The Austrian has previously ranked in the top 10 and has been runner-up at the French Open twice, and will go down in history as one of the best Austrian tennis players.
In 2020, he celebrated the biggest victory of his career in the final of the New York Championship against German Alexander Zverev. In an unforgettable final, Thiem ended his traditional rival’s hopes of winning one of the four major championship titles, after overturning a 0-2 deficit. The best position he occupied in the world rankings was third place, and he also won 17 titles in the tournaments of the World Association of Professional Tennis Players.
But in recent years, Thiem suffered a serious wrist injury that forced him to take a long break, and was unable to regain his level. Thiem currently ranks 117th in the world rankings.
