Magnussen and his brothers
The cascade of penalties that Kevin Magnussen encountered in Miami brought the famous – or infamous – to the headlines penalty points attributed by the commissioners to the drivers in case of particular accidents or irregularities committed during the race weekends. The Haas Dane is now one step away from disqualification, but he wasn’t the only one to be punished during the intense weekend in Florida.
They also had a point taken away from their license Esteban Ocon – guilty of the gross unsafe release that preceded the Sprint race, when leaving the garage the Frenchman did not notice the approaching Ferrari of Charles Leclerc and hit it – and Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard paid for the controversial contact with Oscar Piastri, for which he received a 5-second penalty and – precisely – a penalty point.
From Perez to Alonso, at least four other drivers are shaking
However, for both Ocon and Sainz these were the first penalties in the last 12 months. However, there are other riders who are much closer to the real risk of missing a GP: among the big names he is the most in the balance Sergio Perez. The Red Bull standard bearer has collected 8 penalty points and will have to try to ‘survive’ until September, when the penalty points that were inflicted on him in the Singapore and Japanese GPs last year will be taken away. Similar situation also for Logan Sargeantwho collected six penalty points in 2023 (they will all expire between September and October) and two this year.

A situation that is not very serene from the point of view of the ‘disciplinary notebook’ is also being experienced at Aston Martin. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso have seven and six penalty points respectivelywith the Asturian not being able to discard any during 2024. It is no coincidence that the two-time world champion has engaged in a tough battle in recent weeks against the commissioners and the federation, accused of penalizing non-English drivers more harshly.
