US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrived in Beijing yesterday to start a four-day visit that will include meetings with senior Chinese officials as Washington seeks to stabilize relations between the world’s two largest economies, according to media reports.
The visit, which continues through Sunday, is Yellen’s first to China since her appointment to the post, and comes a few weeks after a visit by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
During her visit, Yellen will seek to enhance communication between the two countries, avoid mutual misunderstanding, and expand cooperation on issues related to the global economy, warming and the debt crisis in emerging and developing countries, according to the ministry.
The visit constitutes an occasion to advance the plan to hold a bilateral summit, after Biden expressed his hope to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping soon.
