In a statement issued on Monday, Biden believed that his proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza in 3 stages is the best way to end the violence, stressing that Washington is working to reach a two-state solution.
This comes amid a major stumble in the negotiations being conducted by the mediators to end the Israeli war on Gaza, which has been ongoing for 8 months, as an informed Israeli official said that Hamas’ demands contradict the broad outlines of the American proposal, according to what was reported by the “Axios” website.
The American President said that the Hamas movement would not be able to achieve an end to the war except through an agreement based on Biden’s speech, as he put it.
He believed that the end of the war was not possible until all the prisoners returned to their homes, including the kidnappers of the second stage, which included soldiers and men under the age of fifty.
Biden pointed out that Hamas violated the previous prisoner deal, and therefore any agreement must include conditions that allow Israel to resume fighting if Hamas violates the deal again.
The head of Hamas’s political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, had confirmed earlier on Sunday that the movement had shown great flexibility to reach an agreement to stop the war, pointing out that its response to the latest ceasefire proposal was consistent with the principles of the plan previously announced by US President Joe Biden.
He added: “We adhere to the role of mediators and give them the opportunity to conclude a truce agreement.” He reiterated that the movement is ready to conclude an agreement that includes a permanent ceasefire and Israel’s withdrawal from the entire Gaza Strip. He also considered that “the solution will be achieved through negotiations that lead to a comprehensive agreement, no matter how much the Israeli side evades.”
Since the one-week truce in November, repeated attempts to reach a ceasefire agreement have failed, with Hamas insisting on a permanent end to the war and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to end the war before eliminating Hamas.
