The retired general told UN News that he is very honored to have his name considered to lead the mission.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations (United Nations), Antonio Guterresannounced this Thursday (18.Aug.2022) the appointment of the reserve general Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz (We can) to lead the mission that will investigate the incident at the Olenivka detention center in eastern Ukraine.
“General Santos Cruz is a respected officer with more than 40 years of national and international military and public security experience, including as a commander of UN peace operations”Guterres said in an interview with journalists.
The Secretary General was accompanied by the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoganand by the Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Santos Cruz told UN News who is very honored to have his name considered to lead the mission.
“I am sure that the teammates who will also be selected [pela ONU] they are people of the highest quality. This is a guarantee for our work, so that we can have a positive result on the subject that will be addressed”said the general of the reserve.
Santos Cruz commanded two peacekeeping missions UN: led peacekeeping forces in MINUSTAH, Haiti, from 2007 to 2009 and was appointed in 2013 to command Congo’s peacekeeping mission after the country’s war in Monusco.
The retired general also produced a report for the UN on peacekeeping missions around the world. The document is known as “Santos Cruz Report”.
INCIDENT IN OLENIVKA
On July 29, 2022, an explosion was recorded at a separatist-controlled detention center in Olenivka. Russian officials said the incident killed 50 people.
Moscow and Kiev blamed each other for the explosion. according to Washington Postindependent investigators were prevented by Russian authorities and separatists from reaching the scene.
Olenivka is located in donetskself-proclaimed republic in Donbassin eastern Ukraine.
