Two women, one Austrian and one Romanian, died this week after being attacked by a shark off the coast of Egypt, reported the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment and the Foreign Ministries of Austria and Romania.
“Two women were attacked by a shark while they were swimming in the Sahel Hashish region, south of Hurghada.“, the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment said on Sunday, specifying that an investigation had been opened.
According to the Austrian news agency APA, one of the two victims was 68 years old and originally from the Tyrol region (western Austria), and was in Egypt on vacation.

The Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to AFP this Sunday “the death of an Austrian citizen in Egypt”, without providing further details.
A video on social networks shows one of the attacks. Elisabeth Sauer, the 68-year-old Austrian woman, died in this.
Dozens of tourists were dismayed at the violent scene, from which no one could help her. The woman herself died shortly after suffering a shark attack, in which she lost an arm and a leg. Footage shows her desperately swimming back to shore after the attack. No one dared to go into the sea and help her out of it. Several versions indicate that there were no lifeguards or rescuers at the scene.

For its part, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing information received from the Egyptian authorities, confirmed to AFP this Sunday the “death of a Romanian citizen”, “apparently” caused by a “shark attack” in front of the shores of Hurghada.
This case would have been recorded at another time, but no further details are known.
The governor of the Red Sea region, Amr Hanafi on Friday ordered all beaches in the area closed for three days after “an Austrian tourist had her arm ripped off, probably in a shark attack.”

The Red Sea is a very popular tourist destination, where sharks are often present, although they rarely attack bathers who swim within the spaces authorized for it.
