The account of US presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, on the TikTok application gained 1.3 million followers today, Sunday, within hours of the billionaire Republican joining the social media platform.
This step, which Trump took yesterday, Saturday, would help him reach young voters during his attempt to win a new presidential term and return to the White House.
Trump is locked in a tight race with Democratic President Joe Biden before the presidential elections scheduled for next November 5.
Biden’s election campaign already has an account on the TikTok application, which is used by about 170 million Americans.
Trump posted a video clip on his TikTok account yesterday evening, Saturday, in which he appeared greeting the fans in a martial arts tournament match in Newark, New Jersey.
Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung said the campaign would leave no front uncontested, adding: “This represents (some sort of) continued outreach to the younger audience who consumes pro-Trump and anti-Biden content.”
The courts blocked Trump’s attempt to ban TikTok while he was president.
Trump already has an active presence on other social media platforms. He has more than 87 million followers on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter) and more than seven million on his own platform (Truth Social), on which he posts almost daily.
