The Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service (COT) of the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona has successfully carried out its first surgery assisted by a 3D boot, reducing the time and risk of the intervention.
The intervention represents a “radical change” in the treatment of patients with complex pathologiessuch as diabetes and foot deformities, according to the Sant Pau Hospital in a statement this Monday.
The patient, a 69-year-old woman with diabetes and Charcot neuropathy, suffered from a severe foot deformity that prevented her from walking and It “enormously” conditioned their quality of life.
The COT surgeon at the Sant Pau Hospital, Laia López, has assured that under normal conditions, they probably would have opted “for conservative treatment or, in extreme cases, even amputation.
The boot, designed by Dimension Lab specifically for the patient’s anatomy, allowed “perform the two phases of the surgery in a single intervention and in less than an hour”, when it would normally have required three, and reduced radiation exposure and the risk of infection.
