Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed on Thursday that the G7 leaders meeting in Italy had reached an agreement on using frozen Russian funds worth fifty billion US dollars to aid Ukraine.
“I assure you that we have reached a political agreement to provide additional financial support to Ukraine of approximately fifty billion dollars by the end of the year,” said Millioni, whose country chairs the G7 this year.
Leaders of the Group of Seven major industrialized countries began an annual summit on Thursday, in which they seek to focus on supporting Ukraine in its current crisis.
The summit, which will be held at the Borgo Ignazia resort in southern Italy from June 13 to 15, also includes on its agenda the situation in the Middle East, the immigration file, and the issue of artificial intelligence.
The group includes the United States, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel also joined the summit, representing the European Union.
