Analysis verifies compliance of Presidency spending; opinion will be forwarded to the National Congress for consideration
O TCU (Court of Accounts of the Union) judges on Wednesday (June 12, 2024) the president’s accountability Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) relating to 2023. Afterwards, the opinion and report will be forwarded to the National Congress for analysis.
The case rapporteur is Minister Vital do Rêgo. The analysis verifies whether the Presidency of the Republic’s spending complied with current fiscal and budgetary rules. The extraordinary session of the Court of Auditors will be held at 10 am.
This will be the 9th time that Lula will have his management accounts reviewed by the TCU. In his first 2 terms, Lula had his accounts always approved with reservations. The expectation for the assessment of last year’s accounts is that the result will be the same.
Of the last 5 presidents of the Republic, only Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) obtained an approval opinion from the TCU without reservations. The last Tucano president achieved the feat 3 times (1996, 1997 and 1999).
The only president to have her accounts rejected by the Court of Auditors was Dilma Rousseff (PT). The successor to Lula’s first governments failed to obtain approval from the TCU on two occasions (2014 and 2015).
Just like Lula, former presidents Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Michel Temer (MDB) also had their accounts approved with reservations in all years of their respective mandates.
