Despite admitting possibility of meeting, Kremlin spokesman says negotiations stalled “a long time ago”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday (June 1, 2022) that Russia does not rule out a meeting between the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky. The bilateral meeting has been requested by Ukraine since the beginning of the war on February 24.
Peskov said that the meeting must be prepared in advance, but that the dialogue between the countries is at a standstill”long time” and there are no plans to resume. Negotiations were being conducted by negotiators on both sides. Russia says Ukraine is to blame for the disruption.
On March 3, Zelensky said that talking to Putin is the only way to stop war. Last Friday (May 27), Ukrainian President said again need to meet with his Russian counterpart.
“There are things to discuss with the Russian leader. I’m not saying that for me our people are eager to talk to him, but we have to face the reality of what we’re living.”, declared.
Zelensky said he wants a meeting with the Russian president to establish an agreement between the countries, however he said that Putin still does not seem “be ready for peace”.
