The public prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig has been investigating a 45-year-old in the Maddie McCann case for two years. The suspect has now been examined for physical characteristics.
Braunschweig – It’s been 15 years since the English girl Maddie McCann disappeared while on vacation in Portugal. After her parents had searched in vain for the then three-year-old for years, the breakthrough came in June 2020: a suspect from Bavaria was arrested. Since then, he has been the subject of a murder investigation. The 45-year-old is now being examined for physical characteristics, as the Braunschweig public prosecutor announced on Friday.
Maddie McCann case: Suspect examined for physical characteristics
Christian B. is currently serving a several-year prison sentence in Oldenburg for the rape of an American woman in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2005, where around a year and a half later the then three-year-old Maddie disappeared from an apartment complex. From 1995 to 2007 he is said to have lived regularly in the Algarve.
The physical examination of the suspect is now a further step in the investigation into Maddie’s disappearance. According to Hans Christian Wolters from the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office, the suspect was subjected to identification treatment. Such a measure would essentially take photos and record possible special features such as scars, tattoos or birthmarks, explains the spokesman for the law enforcement agency.

Maddie McCann: Suspects are under investigation for further sex crimes
The photos and information obtained are to be compared, among other things, with descriptions of the perpetrators by witnesses, as the prosecutor describes. Christian B. is also being investigated for other sex crimes, including two cases of abuse and three allegations of rape.
With a view to these allegations, there is still a period during which the defense attorney can comment on the allegations, the prosecutor continued. This may be followed by follow-up investigations before a decision can be made on an indictment.
The suspect’s defense attorney, Friedrich Fülscher, told the dpa that he did not yet have the result of the identification service. Therefore, he could not comment on the investigative measure. Overall, there is still no statement from the defense on the various allegations against Christian B. (mef/dpa)
